george mcneill - AFTER DINNER SPEAKER
record breaking sprinter - sports coach
George McNeill is one of Scotland’s most remarkable sporting figures, having excelled at the highest level in both professional football and world-class athletics. Today, he is a highly sought-after after-dinner speaker, known for his engaging delivery, dry humour and unique perspective on an extraordinary career.
After spells in senior football with Hibernian, Morton and Stirling Albion, George made a remarkable transition into professional sprinting. He quickly rose to the very top of the sport, winning the centenary Powderhall Sprint in 1970 and setting a world professional record over 110 metres.
His achievements on the track are exceptional. George famously defeated Olympic champion Tommie Smith to become World Professional Sprint Champion, before reaching the pinnacle of his career with victory in Australia’s prestigious Stawell Gift — where he remains the race’s oldest ever winner.
Since retiring from competition, George has remained closely involved in sport through coaching roles with clubs including Hearts and Livingston. His after-dinner speaking blends warmth, humour and fascinating insight from a unique era, making him an excellent choice for sporting dinners, corporate events and hospitality occasions.
