George McNeill is one of Scotland’s most remarkable sporting figures, excelling at the highest level in both professional football and world-class athletics. Today, he is a highly popular after-dinner speaker, known for his engaging delivery, dry humour and unique sporting insight.
After spells in professional football with Hibernian, Morton and Stirling Albion, George turned to sprinting with extraordinary success. He won the centenary Powderhall Sprint in 1970, set a world professional record over 110 metres, and went on to defeat Olympic champion Tommie Smith to become World Professional Sprint Champion. His career peaked with victory in the prestigious Stawell Gift in Australia, where he became the race’s oldest ever winner.
Since retiring from competition, George has remained closely involved in sport through coaching roles with clubs including Hearts and Livingston. His after-dinner speaking combines warmth, wit and a fascinating story from a unique era of sport, making him a firm favourite at sporting dinners, corporate events and hospitality occasions.
