GORDON SMITH • AFTER DINNER SPEAKER
Gordon Smith enjoyed a distinguished playing career with clubs including Kilmarnock, Rangers, Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester City, becoming one of the most respected figures in Scottish football. A talented attacking midfielder with an eye for goal, he famously scored the winner for Rangers in the 1978 Scottish League Cup Final against Celtic and helped the club secure a domestic treble during his first season at Ibrox.
His move to Brighton made him one of the highest-profile Scottish players in England at the time, and he remains closely associated with the dramatic 1983 FA Cup Final against Manchester United at Wembley. Gordon also represented Scotland at international level, earning 15 caps, while later spells with clubs including Oldham Athletic, FC Basel and Stirling Albion added further depth to an outstanding football career.
Following retirement, Gordon moved seamlessly into football management, media and administration. He worked as a respected BBC pundit and football agent before becoming Chief Executive of the Scottish Football Association in 2007. During his time with the SFA he played a leading role in modernising the organisation and was instrumental in the introduction of the Home Nations eligibility agreement which continues to influence international football today.
A warm, engaging and highly knowledgeable speaker, Gordon is a popular choice for sporting dinners, Q&A events and corporate functions. Blending humour, honesty and fascinating stories from every level of the game, he offers audiences a unique insight into football both on and off the pitch, from dressing rooms and transfer deals to the boardroom and international stage.
