Fred MacAulay is one of Scotland’s most recognisable comedians and broadcasters, with a career spanning more than three decades. Best known for presenting BBC Radio Scotland’s hugely successful MacAulay and Co. for almost 18 years, he has also become a familiar face on television through appearances on programmes including Mock the Week, QI, Have I Got News For You and numerous BBC Scotland productions. His sharp wit, effortless delivery and years of live performance make him one of the country’s most accomplished after-dinner speakers.
Although he came to stand-up comedy later than many, Fred quickly established himself as a leading name on the comedy circuit. A regular performer at the Edinburgh Fringe and comedy festivals around the world, he has also appeared on some of BBC Radio 4’s best-loved panel shows, including I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue, Just a Minute, The News Quiz and The Unbelievable Truth. His warmth, quick thinking and ability to connect with any audience have earned him an outstanding reputation both on stage and on air.
Away from comedy, Fred has enjoyed a varied broadcasting career, presenting programmes including McCoist and MacAulay, Life According to Fred, Simply Fred and Scots on the Box. He has also embraced more unusual challenges, from competing in Comic Relief Does Fame Academy to kayaking the Caledonian Canal for Sport Relief in freezing conditions and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for charity. These experiences provide a rich source of entertaining stories that add another dimension to his speaking engagements.
A graduate of the University of Dundee with an MA in Accountancy and Jurisprudence, Fred later returned as Rector and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws in recognition of his contribution to the university. Today, he remains in high demand as an after-dinner speaker, awards host and event presenter, bringing warmth, intelligence and superb comic timing to audiences across the UK and internationally.
