John McLaughlin is one of the UK’s most successful songwriters, record producers and music industry figures, with a remarkable career spanning more than 30 years. Best known for writing and producing seven number one hits and over 25 top ten singles worldwide, John has worked with some of the biggest names in music including Busted, Westlife, Blue, 5ive, 911 and Sandi Thom. In conversation, John offers audiences a fascinating behind-the-scenes insight into the music business and life at the top of the charts.
Starting his early career writing for Simon Cowell, who remains a close personal friend, John quickly established himself as one of the industry’s leading creative talents. Alongside his huge chart success, he has also written and produced music for artists including Echo & The Bunnymen and Shane MacGowan, while his achievements have been recognised with awards including a BMI Million Airplay Award and the Nordoff Robbins Living Legend Award.
John’s career has also seen him work closely with Sir Rod Stewart, with the pair developing a strong friendship after co-writing the track ‘Julia’ for Rod’s number one album Blood Red Roses. Rod later invited John’s band, Johnny Mac and the Faithful, to join him as special guests on major UK and Irish arena and stadium tours, while also appearing on tracks from their debut album Midnight Glasgow Rodeo.
